Backpacking was my number one sport as a youth. To go to places that are wild and untamed was always the greatest thrill.  Painting outdoors, via “plein air” is exhilarating. When at a new location, I am looking for what my subject has to say to me, and I try to add a narrative, which gives the painting a purpose. All my senses are heightened and my responsibility to capture that moment’s perspective,  composition, and color notes, is solidified. This act forces me to be more accurate in brush work, and fine tunes my skill level.  In the studio, I get a fresh look, make sure the colors are clean and harmonious. This process forces the artist eye to be ever vigilant and growing.
